Cedar

Cedar shingle and shake, cut and laid to match

Cedar roofs tell the age of a house by their cut, their exposure and the way they have weathered. We match all three, and say plainly when a roof is past saving.

  • Shingle and shake in the width, cut and exposure you have

  • Breathable underlayment where the roof is meant to dry

  • Valleys, ridges and eaves hand fitted

  • Replacement of the deck boards that rot under cedar

What cedar needs

Five things that decide how long a cedar roof lasts

  • 01

    Air under the shingles

Cedar lasts when it can dry on both faces. We say whether your deck and underlayment let it.

  • 02

    Shade and moisture

A north slope under trees stays wet and ages faster. We tell you which slopes to watch.

  • 03

    The cut

Straight, tapered and fish-scale shingles are different roofs. We match the one you have.

  • 04

    Treatment

Fire-retardant treatment is a separate decision with its own upkeep, and your insurer may ask about it.

  • 05

    Cleaning

Moss and debris hold water against the wood. We clean gently, never with a pressure washer.

  • 06

    Edges and flashings

Where cedar meets a chimney or wall, copper keeps water out. We fit it with the shingles.
