Asked before the bid is signed

Does my roof need the Historic District Commission?

It depends on the house, the district and the work. The Planning Department can tell you from your address and a description, and we call them with you.

How long will my roof last?

Slate is commonly said to last 60 to 150 years, copper longer than most roofs around it, and cedar several decades. Nails, flashings and the deck beneath usually decide before the material does.

Can you repair slate instead of replacing it?

Often. If most of the stone is sound, we reset, re-nail and replace the few that failed.

How much will it cost?

We bid after a visit and do not publish prices. The bid lists each detail as a line so you can see what to change.

What does the bid include?

Strip and disposal, deck inspection with a per-board price for repairs, underlayment, the material as drawn, flashing, ridge and gutters listed, cleanup, and any application work.

Do you carry insurance?

Yes. General liability and workers' compensation. We send the certificate to you or your architect on request.

If my insurer is involved, what do you do?

We inspect, photograph and write an itemized estimate you can share. You decide whether to file, and the deductible stays with you.

Do you handle permits?

Where the city requires one, we pull it, and it appears as a line in the bid.

Can I see the contract first?

Yes. Ask for a sample contract before the visit.

What about ice dams?

They are usually an attic problem before a roof problem. We look at insulation, air sealing and ventilation, and tell you what to fix where.

Can you work with my architect?

Yes. We send marked-up drawings and samples on whatever sheet size the architect uses.

What if I have an asphalt roof?

We work in slate, cedar and copper. If asphalt is what you need, we say so and tell you what to ask of whoever bids it.
